General Information
What is Physical Therapy?
Physical therapy is a healthcare profession dedicated
to enhancing and restoring functional movement and
quality of life in individuals experiencing physical
impairments or disabilities. Our physical therapists
(PTs) assess, diagnose, and treat a variety of
conditions that affect the musculoskeletal,
neuromuscular, and vestibular systems.
Physical therapists and physical therapist assistants
employ a range of therapeutic interventions,
including specific exercises, manual therapy, and the
use of mechanical devices, to alleviate impairments
and functional limitations. They also play a crucial
role in educating patients, preventing the loss of
mobility, and promoting overall health and wellness.

Do I Need a Referral to Start Physical Therapy?
In North Carolina, you generally do not need a referral
to start physical therapy. The state operates under
direct access laws, which means you can see a physical
therapist without a doctor's referral. However, there
are a few things to consider:
o
Insurance Requirements: Some insurance plans,
including Medicare and certain private insurers,
may require a referral or prescription from a
physician for coverage. Check with your insurance
provider to confirm their policies.
o
Treatment Duration: While you can start physical
therapy without a referral, North Carolina law may
limit the duration or scope of treatment without
physician involvement. For example, after a
certain number of visits or days, your physical
therapist might need to consult with your
physician.
o
Specific Conditions: If your condition requires
diagnostic imaging (like X-rays) or is beyond the
scope of what a physical therapist can treat, they
may refer you to a physician for further evaluation.
